Managing Topics

In Skill Lake, the Administrators can manage the topics created when adding learning items such as courses, events, learning paths, books, snippets, etc, using the Manage Topics page. You can create, edit, and delete the topics. It is possible to merge the topics based on their dependencies or recurrence. The learning items tagged to the topics that are merged to will be replaced with the merged topic.

Adding Topics

Click on the Create topic button to create a new topic.

  • The Create topic pop-up appears, where you can enter the topic title, description, related topics, mark as featured/active topic and click on the Save & finish button. 
  • To add another topic, click on the Save & add new button.
  • The topics saved will be displayed in the Manage Topics page.

Importing Topics

Click on the Import topics button to import the topics via an excel file.

  • Click the ‘Download template’ option to download the Microsoft Excel file. 
  • Enter the topic details in the Microsoft Excel file.

  • Upload the excel file and click on the Import button to import the topic details to the Manage topics page.

Managing Topics

Managing topics involves organizing and overseeing the categorization and structure of content within a system. This page lists all the topics created by the users. It is possible to view, edit, merge and delete the topics.

Viewing the topic

You can view the topic name, count of courses, events and snippets used for this topic, count of subscribers and related topics, toggle if this is a featured topic, and actions that can be performed for this topic.

  • Click on the View icon to view the topic title and status.

  • The ‘Topic details’ pop-up appears where you can view the topic title and topic status.

Editing the topic

Click on the Edit icon to edit the topic details.

  • The ‘Edit topic’ pop-up appears, where you can update the topic title, description, related topics, mark as featured topic, mark the topic as active and click on the Save button.

Merge topic

Similar topics can be merged to a single topic to clean up the topics list. Click on the Settings icon and the Merge icon to merge the topics.

  • The Merge topics pop-up appears where you can select the topic, topics to merge, new topic title, description, related topics, mark as featured/active and click on the Save button.

The topics will get merged, and the new topic title will be displayed in the Manage topics page. The learning items (courses, events, snippets, learning paths and books) tagged to the topics that are merged to will be replaced with the merged topic.

Example: Suppose ‘Sales’ and ‘Mktg’ are getting merged with the topic ‘Sales and Marketing’, then the courses, events and snippets created for ‘Sales’ and ‘Mktg’ will get tagged to the new topic ‘Sales and Marketing’. The related topics of the two topics will be displayed in the new merged topic.

Deleting topic

Click on the Settings icon and Delete icon to delete the selected topic.

  • On clicking the Delete icon, a confirmation message will appear, based on which you can delete the selected topic.
